ROJO MOJO
The Album that started it all!
This project started with a “joke” song, explained below in “You Don’t Even Know (The Love”), and then another song that I wanted to write for my boardgame buddy friends (“Analysis Paralysis”). But when I heard how cool the songs sounded, and the great responses they got, I challenged myself to write a full album!
With this set of songs, I was still learning how to use the A.I., and I didn’t realize that I could structure them exactly how I wanted using specific tags. And so I depended on how I wrote the lyrics, hoping that the A.I. would “pick up” the structure I was going for, simply by how I wrote each line.
It worked, for the most part! Although admittedly I was still playing with styles… so this album is the most eclectic in terms of different sounds, I think. Still… some of my favorites DJ Rojo songs are on this first album!
I wanted to write a love song to my husband, but I thought it would be funnier to put my jokey spin on it. We’ve been playing the “I love you MORE” game (that many couples are familiar with) for 20 years now, sometimes taking it to great over-the-top lengths. So what better than a “diss track” for how much my love is stronger than his? (I’m fully expecting a “retaliation track” from him at some point, where he says HIS love is actually stronger. As if!!).
What started as an inside-joke turned into an instantly relatable hit! (P.S. – “The Luckiest” in the lyrics is a reference to the Ben Folds track, which has been “our song” for nearly 20 years).
YOU DON'T EVEN KNOW (THE LOVE)
Boardgames are my obsession, and I kind of wanted to write a song about them — but every idea I had was just too stupid to entertain. Until it hit me… Analysis Paralysis (AP) is so common in almost every game/group, that it just seemed way too perfect a topic. What if someone took it too far one day?
The lyrics came quite easy, but the initial song outputs weren’t working for me. So I had to keep tweaking it until it finally became what I was imagining: a fast-paced song where the lyrics all run into each other. I’m definitely playing this song every Game Night from now on, when my fellow players are taking a little too long on their turns…. 🤪
ANALYSIS PARALYSIS
Anyone in the gay community will tell you that there’s an, uh… trend that tends to happen where guys seem to basically date “clones” of themselves. 🙈 Here in Barcelona, especially in the “bear community,” the phenomenon is quite strong. So I thought I’d poke a little fun at it….
BONE YOUR CLONE
He’s overly optimistic, and just wants to “keep on dancing,” despite how the world might treat him…
This one really captured the ’80s feel I was going for…
CRUTCH BOY (HE'S GOT THE MOVES)
Not many people are aware of this, but something really awful happened to me after I fell off a cliff and broke my back at 19 years old, in the short hour I was waiting, helpless, before my friends were able to find and rescue me…
I was taken advantage of, and it’s been very difficult to talk about this very personal topic, but I felt it was finally time that this 100% true story was told.
THEY STOLE IT
Every once in a while, something happens at home with my husband (something falls, he trips, weird things happen) — and he will inevitably always blame it on a “gremlin” that we have living with us. It became obvious to me that this gremlin needed its own song!
GREMLIN IN THE HOUSE
HOT TUB SURPRISE
Most of the songs up to this point have been inside-jokes or outright silly — and I just wanted at least one song that sounded more mature.
I had the “Make it Stop” chorus in my head, and decided to write from there. But… make WHAT “stop”? I didn’t actually have anything in mind. But then I finally decided to make the song from the POV of my husband, and that ultimately gave me the song’s ending… as there’s definitely something he wishes I would stop doing.
I guess it’s impossible for me to ever be 100% serious. 🤪
MAKE IT STOP!
I just wanted to make something super sweet about my husband and I. My favorite thing about him is how we can have these “laugh attacks” together, and how ONLY the two of us would find what we’re laughing about actually funny.
It was maybe a bit “too sweet” at first, so I felt it needed something else to give it an “edge.” Oh, right — death!! That gave it the perfect balance it needed. I’m sure you can relate — those times you are laughing so hard, you can’t breathe and you think you might die?
DIE LAUGHING
We’ve all had that one “friend” who is just… too much. They can’t stop talking about their own dramas. They couldn’t care less about what’s going on with you — they just want you to be a silent ear for them, and that’s it. This was inspired by a story a friend was telling me about someone else, and before he even said a name I knew exactly who he was talking about… 🙈
This song became an instant hit with my husband and I, perhaps because of the Pet Shop Boys-esque chorus.
Probably my most “serious” song to date — but the title also makes us think of Colin Robinson, which gives us a chuckle…
ENERGY VAMPIRE
With this song, I wanted people to feel that absolute rage while listening to it, and I think I accomplished that. (Including a “Shhhhh!” every chance I got probably helped…. ) 🤣
SHHHHH!
This song is a tribute to those moments.
Yes, I apparently have the sense of humor of a 7-year-old. 🙈 (Although I REALLY like how this one turned out — probably the easiest one to make as I think I’ve cracked the code of the app now).
Although I should probably have a better ending to this album…
